Indiana University conducted a study which revealed that fish oil can be an effective remedy for the symptoms of asthma, especially asthma caused by over exertion or too much exercise.

The study involved 16 asthma sufferers whose symptoms ranged from mild to severe. All patients required daily asthma medication to control episodes. During the study, the asthma patients were given high quantities of fish oil containing EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid – 3.2 gm) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid – 2gm) for approximately three weeks.

Before being administered fish oil, the patients’ lungs were first tested through efficiency exercises. Sputum samples were also taken and analyzed. The tests took note of the inflammatory cells and some markers. The same tests were conducted after the end of the study, and after 3 weeks of fish oil administration, the patients showed a 64% improvement in terms of lung efficiency, and the need for asthma medications had also reduced by approximately 31%. It is thought that this was due to the fact that fish oil contains fatty acids (Omega 3), which have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Fish oil contains Omega 3, which is beneficial to asthma patients due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Medical experts advise asthma patients to increase their consumption of Omega 3 or fish oil instead of consuming more vegetable oils, processed foods, dairy products, and meats which contain Omega 6 (which is pro-inflammatory). So where can you get fish oil? Obviously, fresh or frozen fish contains fish oil in varying quantities depending on the species of fish. However, you can also purchase fish oil supplements in capsule form which are high in Omega 3. If you decide to use supplements, it is important that you purchase only high quality (pharmaceutical grade) fish oil tablets, as poorer quality supplements may contain toxins.
